An actress portrays Ms. Seung-Hyeon Park, an employee at the Sampoong Department Store who was buried in the rubble for 17 days without food or water before she was found.

SEOUL, South Korea, Saturday, July 15, 1995— Rescuers pulled a 19-year-old woman from the rubble of a department store Saturday, 16 days after the building collapsed and killed at least 300 people.

The condition of the woman, Park Sung Hyun, 19, was not immediately clear.

“I can’t believe that this is real,” her brother told Yonhap Television.

Emergency workers resumed digging in the rubble for what they hoped was a second survivor.

“I heard a slight moan coming from a hole,” said Ahn Kwang Shik, a rescue worker. He said rescuers had not expected to find any survivors among the concrete slabs. The last survivor was found on Tuesday about 20 yards from where Miss Park was found.

The death toll in the disaster, which was blamed on faulty construction, stood at 305 early today, the worst peacetime disaster in Korea’s modern history. Some 330 people are missing.

Update:

Miss Park has fully recovered and still lives in her country.
